INTRODUCTION
Ants are a social insects that live together. Ants are insects classified in Order Hymenoptera and are brought to the family of Formicidae. There are about 10,000 species of ants but only 40 species are considered as pests. Some of the species that considered as pest are Black house ant (Ochetellus), Fire ant (Solenopsis spp), Ghost ant (Tapinoma melanocephalum), Crazy ants (Paratrechina longicornis), Pharoah’s ant (Monomorium pharaonsis) etc. In Malaysia, ants are among the most common pests in the home environment.
Why ants are pests
- Irritating to most people when found in food or drink.
- When ants are moving in groups, it can cause disruption.
- Mechanical vector to human disease.
- Can transmit pathogenic organisms to humans.
- Can cause contamination on surgical instruments and eat the injured patients wounds in hospital.
